Historical Significance of Leprosy ?

Answer:
population
Unclean, dirty.
Leprosy is skin disease which happens because of filth and unclean conditions of living. Though I don't know much about the historical significance....I do know that it hails since Christ was living because he is said to havecured some people of this disease. See Benhur movie....and you'll know.
Leprosy is a disease as old as mankind. It was recognized in the ancient civilizations of China, Egypt and India. The first known written mention of leprosy is dated 600 BC. Throughout history, the afflicted have often been ostracized by their communities and families. Old remedies as chalmogra oil have been prescribed under Ayurveda. Similarly, sufferers of leprosy were isolated in of the most of countries for the fear of transmission as leprosy was regarded highly contagious. By the time the organism was discovered, it had spread in all the continents.
I always thought leprosy was a type of skin cancer just misunderstood in earlier times. However, I read up on it and it is actually a skin condition that is contagious. Of course the bible refers to leprosy cases outcast in the countryside but more recent leprosy cases were restricted to asylums to stop the disease. Today with improved safety measures such as hand washing and disinfectants and advanced medical treatment leprosy is rare but still active. Thank God!
Its a slowly progressive disease leading to discoloration of skin, loss of sesation and deformity. Probably the oldest disease known to mankind. it was considered a curse of God. Medicines (Dapsones)for leprosy were discovered only during 1943. Before that lepers were isolated and kept away till death.
